The average person impression of how the weld metal is that you just fire-up the blow torch and run it along the edge of the metal seam to weld together. Or they may think you can just run that same torch in every type of metal and cut through it, like a safe-cracker in the film. But the reality is that professional welding actually involves some fairly extensive knowledge, and a bit of an art form that requires years of experience to master. Even so, if you want to learn, you can start with some simple techniques. Once you've mastered the basics and have an idea starter, then you can move on to more complicated skills that take longer to master.PrecautionsBefore you start any project, always think about safety precautions first. Tools and equipment can be replaced, you can not be replaced. You might think that getting burned is the worst thing that can happen in a welding accident. However, damage can happen to your eyes from strong light coming from the process. Some metal welding techniques using high voltage electricity to make the weld, which always increases the possibility of electrical or death if you are careless. When you start any welding project, be sure to wear proper helmet to protect your eyes, head and hair. And do not forget the protective gloves and clothing. Lastly, be sure to read and follow all the safety precautions that are written by the manufacturers of certain metal welding equipment you are using.Oxy-Acetylene Welding (also known as Oxyfuel Welding)This is the type of welding that the average person most familiar with, and which is often described as a casual "blow torch". However, although the oxy-acetylene welding is the most common type is known, actually using the techniques of the professionals. On the upside, it is less complicated and less expensive than other types of welding. However, oxy-acetylene is less common today because of less accurate, does not produce a clean weld bead and other methods can lead to weak weld joints because the cooling time is slower than the other involves welding techniques. Even so, if you are interested in learning how to weld metal, you may want to practice oxy-acetylene welding in addition to other types of welding. This would be a useful skill to have because it is the best type to use on common welding projects, such as a pipe or tube, and when you have to use welding equipment to perform repairs, bending and cutting.Arc WeldingThe most common technique used today is "Arc Welding". If you learn how to weld metal, you will definitely need to practice welding arc. Instead of using a gas torch, arc welding involves the use of high voltage electricity passed to a piece of metal. In Arc Welding, splash (or "arc") jumping across from one piece of metal to another cause enough heat to melt the metal and form a weld. This process is more desirable in many cases because it is more accurate and produces clean, strong weld. In the category of "Arc Welding" there are actually several different methods to choose from, depending on the type of metal welding work you need to do.Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is probably the best when you have a large welds or welding metal in an unusual position, in which the rough welds are acceptable. With this method, electricity runs through an electrode rod (or "stick") that is completely melted, producing welded joints. On the other hand, MIG Welding, also known as Metal Inert Gas Welding, or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), it might be better if you are involved in a project that requires a metal welding speeds. With this technique you do not use a welding rod that you have to keep replacing as they melt. Instead, you use equipment that sends electricity through a metal tip that does not melt, and a separate piece of wire is fed continuously to the end of the melt and form a weld. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welding MIG welding is somewhat similar to, but better when working with thin materials where you need high-quality welds and speed is not important. When you learn you will also hear from other methods, such as Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), Plasma Welding, etc. But do not worry too much about remembering all the various techniques. Only focus on one method at a time and get to the point where you feel comfortable that you know how to weld with that method before you learn something new.

Another method WeldingAlthough you will primarily be related to Arc Welding and Oxy-Acetylene Welding when you learn how to weld, you may hear about other types and are wondering what they are, such as Resistance Welding, Energy Beam Welding Welding and Solid-State. Do not let it overwhelm you now. Many of them are welding method is especially useful in large, specialized industrial applications and are not really affect you when you learn how to weld.
